New test centre to make hydrogen dreams and climate ambitions a reality

This is what Force Technology, located in DTU Science Park, writes in a press release.

Hydrogen is the key to a greener energy sector and to meet the Danish government’s climate goals. However, a switch to hydrogen and Power-to-X requires a technological and technical quantum leap – not least, new and larger testing facilities are needed.

Therefore, the Danish Gas Technology Centre and Force Technology are now setting up a hydrogen-technology test centre to help the players in the energy sector with the transition to hydrogen.

A not unproblematic gas
Hydrogen places new and special demands on the energy sector. It is not an unproblematic gas to deal with. For example, there are high numbers of safety and environmental aspects that are needed to take into account. Therefore, good testing facilities are a prerequisite for success, and with the Danish Gas Technical Center and Force Technology’s experience in this area, it is natural that they go in and take up the task, says Helle Gottschalk Nygaard, Laboratory Manager at the Danish Gas Technology Centre and senior project manager for establishing test centre for hydrogen technology.

She states further that with the support of the EUDP programme, they can already establish an advanced testing environment for the benefit of all the players developing and marketing their technologies into a hydrogen market that will be crucial to the transition of EU countries to renewable energy.

Testing, analysis and development
In the test centre, tests and analysis must be carried out before the production, transport and consumption of hydrogen – e.g. material testing, hydrogen quality analysis, metrology and efficiency, emission and leakage tests. The centre will be able to service all hydrogen technologies ranging, from boilers and fuel cells, to large sector-connecting plants as well as from kW to GW size.

The purpose of the centre is to first and foremost support and facilitate the development of hydrogen technologies so that hydrogen can deliver its full potential in an integrated energy system. In addition, the Centre will stimulate the development of new hydrogen and PtX technologies and help them in the market. But it is not just about lifting individual products from individual companies to market – it’s just as much about giving the whole area a general boost, states Nicole Ciacotich, Head of Department at Force Technology.

For that reason, the new centre will seek cooperation with other Danish players, and thereby support the Danish position of strength in green energy technology, but will also focus on European cooperation in particular.

DKK 6.8 million from EUDP
The hydrogen technology test centre will be developed with DKK 6.8 million funding from Green Labs DK under the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP).

The test centre supports Danish energy and climate policy and enables a future in which hydrogen plays the leading role. At the same time, the centre supports sector coupling – i.e. moving energy between e.g. electricity, heat, gas, industry and transport fuels.

The test centre will be located in connection with Force Technology’s facilities in Brøndby and the Danish Gas Technical Center in Hørsholm. In addition to the stationary testing facilities, there will also be mobile facilities that can be moved to where the need is.
