More research ideas should become medicines, and Marigold helps all the way from lab to market

On October 2, DTU Science Park opens its doors for this year’s Funding Bazaar, where startups and scaleups can meet investors, VC’s, and funds with a strong focus on hardware and deep tech. One of them is Marigold Innovation.

Marigold Innovation is an investment and co-founding company that works closely with researchers to turn promising biotech research into companies and drug candidates. Marigold not only invests in early-stage biotech projects, but they build companies from the ground up, together with the researchers.

How can we help more scientific breakthroughs become real treatments for patients?

That question has been the core focus for Marigold Innovation since the company was founded in 2018.
At universities, research and knowledge are created that can shape the future. But the path to market is complex and requires different competencies than those typically found in academia. When research receives qualified support with business development, regulation, and capital, even early discoveries can evolve into new treatments that make a real difference for patients worldwide.

I was a skilled researcher, but not skilled enough to bring medicines to the market on my own,” says Peter Horn Møller, Partner at Marigold Innovation, with a smile.

That’s exactly why Marigold was created. The goal is to identify breakthrough research projects, often at the very moment a researcher begins to sense that a discovery could become a drug.

Marigold focuses on the very early stages, where most traditional investors are not active. At this point, the potential is not yet commercially validated, there is no business plan, and the technology is far from market ready.

Researchers should do high-quality science. They shouldn’t necessarily write business plans, build supplier networks, or raise funding, we’ll take care of that.

Before entering into a formal partnership, Marigold offers support and sparring without obligations. If the collaboration works, Marigold becomes a co-founder of the newly formed company.

Marigold brings a team that essentially operates like a small pharma company, with expertise in IP strategy, regulatory affairs, financing, business development, team structure, and more. All the things a single researcher or small group typically lacks the resources for and shouldn’t have to handle alone.

A model built for research, not against it

Many researchers naturally want to focus on scientific development, while other parts of the process require experience with business, regulation, and investment. That’s where Marigold steps in as co-founder and operational partner.

“Researchers are experts in their field, and we contribute the commercial and operational expertise that helps move the research toward the market. It creates a strong division of labor where everyone does what they do best,” says Peter Horn Møller.

That’s why Marigold is involved from the very beginning, helping shape the company and develop a roadmap to mature the technology toward early proof-of-concept. At the same time, the researchers can stay focused on the lab and the science, while Marigold handles everything else.

From lab to breakthrough medicine

Since 2018, Marigold has screened over 150 projects and made four investments. The goal is clear: to build companies that can eventually be acquired by the pharmaceutical industry, backed by documented effect, solid proof-of-concept data, and strong teams.

Marigold especially looks for disruptive drug candidates with the potential to change the treatment landscape in their field.

But it’s not just about the technology, it’s just as much about trust, collaboration, and human chemistry.

We focus a lot on the team. You need to trust each other and be able to work together for many years,” Peter says.

Why DTU Science Park and why Funding Bazaar?

Marigold is based in DTU Science Park, and that’s no coincidence. The park provides access to one of the strongest research environments in the Nordics, with labs, entrepreneurs, and an active life science community.

Marigold doesn’t just want to be a tenant but an active part of the ecosystem, which is also why they’re participating in Funding Bazaar 2025.

At Funding Bazaar, we hope to meet researchers who believe they have something groundbreaking and know they need help with the things they’re not passionate about. That’s where we come in,” Peter concludes.
