Development of medtech receives a boost with million-dollar support for startups

Medtech plays a crucial role in the Danish economy. However, many medtech startups face closure if they don’t receive the proper support from the beginning. The journey from a good idea to the global market is lengthy and costly. With a backing of 19 million, a new initiative aims to help entrepreneurs on their way.

MedTech Growth is open for applications. Apply before the early bird deadline on April 15, for a 30-minute consultation on your application, maximizing your chances of being accepted into the program.

For medtech startups, the journey from prototype to the final product is both complex and costly. The expensive and lengthy development phase can impede effective marketing and success for promising startups, thereby hindering growth.  A solution to this challenge benefits both the entrepreneurs themselves and ensures that Denmark continues to play a central role in the development of medical technology on a global scale. It is in this light that MedTech Growth aims to become an internationally recognized program.  “For several years, we have dedicated our efforts to supporting medtech companies and have clearly recognized the need to enhance assistance during the startup phase. Companies face prolonged approval processes that can take several years, and simultaneously, they are confronted with significant costs when initiating clinical studies. Through our new program, we help them navigate through all regulatory challenges. We can offer them access to funding and an indispensable ecosystem, and our experienced panel of experts is ready to provide advice and assist them in building a solid business foundation,” says Steen Donner, CEO of DTU Science Park.

Medical technology is the new trend, and more investment is being made in medtech companies than ever before. This is not surprising, as we need exactly these kinds of companies. They enhance our quality of life, health, and well-being and can also contribute to optimizing healthcare systems worldwide.

We need to, very purposefully, support the new medtech startups so that they navigate through the challenging startup process and can subsequently grow globally.

“Denmark is among the leading nations in medtech. Important players in the global market are Danish, and we also see a growing influx of innovative startups in Denmark. However, these positive trends must not become complacency. On the contrary, there is potential here that needs to be unleashed. We need to, very purposefully, support the new medtech startups so that they navigate through the challenging startup process and can subsequently grow globally,” says Thomas Hofman-Bang, CEO of Industriens Fond, which, together with DTU Science Park, is launching the groundbreaking program, MedTech Growth.

By becoming part of the MedTech Growth program, participants gain insight into how to run a healthy business. They also receive assistance in addressing more sector-specific challenges within medtech, such as their regulatory strategy and reimbursement.

Furthermore, MedTech Growth also focuses on strengthening the bond between the new medtech startups and the more established industry. This can contribute to forming new fruitful collaborations:

“We know that networks play a crucial role in enabling medtech startups to achieve international scaling. Larger companies also benefit from the innovation and new solutions that medtech startups bring to the table, and here at DTU Science Park, we have a strong ecosystem of life science companies where meaningful partnerships are formed between both large and small companies. This is where we see concrete results being achieved,” says Steen Donner.

Preparing for the global stage

“The goal is for entrepreneurs to create a robust foundation for their further growth journey. Their business model needs to be in place, and they need to be equipped to step onto the international stage. Over the years, we have developed many different growth programs, and we can see that there is a need for a special program within medtech. Medtech entrepreneurs have some very specific challenges in terms of product development and capital needs, and here we can help with a tailored program that can unlock the potential of entrepreneurs,” says Thomas Hofman-Bang, CEO of Industriens Fond, which overall supports MedTech Growth with almost DKK 19 million.

MedTech Growth begins in practice after the summer break. But already now, the program is starting to identify talented medtech startups from both home and abroad to constitute the participant field.

Initially, 20 startups are selected to go through a one-month start-up phase. Then, 14 companies are chosen to continue in the final program, which lasts for one year. It is already possible for medtech startups to apply for participation in the program.
